A single vial of the Pfizer / BioNTech vaccine will now be able to immunize six people.

At least, the European Medicines Agency (EMA) on Friday recommended the use of an additional dose per vial of this vaccine, from five to six doses, thus increasing the vaccination capacity by 20%.

The Amsterdam-based agency authorized on December 21 this vaccine developed by the alliance of the American Pfizer and the German BioNTech, for which the European Commission immediately gave the green light.

Go through special syringes?

Using an extra dose per vial will speed up the number of people vaccinated in Europe, where vaccination campaigns began on December 27.

To do this, special syringes must be used because standard syringes may not be able to extract a sixth dose from a vial, the EMA said.

The announcement comes as the European Union has reached an agreement to acquire 300 million additional doses of the Pfizer / BioNTech vaccine, doubling the quantity ordered.
