Doctors at the German Heart Foundation stated that chronic venous insufficiency is a condition that results from weak walls of leg veins and lack of efficiency of their valves, which leads to blood stagnation and difficulty returning to the heart.

They added that chronic venous insufficiency has many causes, including deep vein thrombosis, varicose veins caused by failure or damage to venous valves in the leg, vascular malformations, and pelvic tumors.

The doctors indicated that the risk factors are obesity, smoking, aging, prolonged standing or sitting, and varicose veins.

The symptoms of chronic venous insufficiency are leg and ankle swelling, leg pain, change in the color and shape of the leg skin, and tingling or numbness in the leg and foot.

Treatment includes wearing compression stockings, exercising walking, avoiding sitting or standing for long periods, losing weight in case of obesity, and raising the leg to become higher than the level of the heart when lying down, and in severe cases, surgery may be required.
