The new variant of the corona virus has been detected for the first time in Saxony.
The Ministry of Health announced on Thursday.
The mutation occurred in a person from Dresden who had returned from Great Britain, it said.
For the first time in Germany, the new variant was found in a woman in Baden-Württemberg in mid-December.
According to the head of the Chancellery, the current lockdown could be necessary for an even longer period in order to significantly reduce the corona numbers.
The new infections have decreased somewhat, said Chancellery chief Helge Braun (CDU).
But if things continue at this rate, it will take 15 weeks for the seven-day incidence to drop below 50 as the target.
The head of the Chancellery named omissions in October as the reason for the currently acute corona situation and the associated restrictions.
"We should have acted more decisively and clearly by mid-October," he said.
He explicitly referred to the Prime Minister's Conference on October 14th, when the country leaders had prevented Chancellor Angela Merkel (CDU) from taking stricter protective measures.
At that time, the second wave of the pandemic was already recognizable, said Braun.
However, the “lead that we had all summer” had only been used up “before we started to act more consistently”.

Braun also pointed out the danger of the new virus mutation.
So far this has only occurred sporadically in Germany, but it has already spilled over to Ireland and is causing incidences there to skyrocket from 130 to over 600.
