Unknown fired several shots at a train in Lüdenscheid in North Rhine-Westphalia on Saturday evening.
The passengers and the train staff were not injured, said a police spokesman at night.
The number of shots is still unclear.
The shots were fired around 9 p.m.
"Several windows were splintered but not smashed," said the press officer.
The homicide squad is investigating, the police are also looking for the perpetrators with the help of a helicopter.
Because of the investigations, the section between Lüdenscheid-Bruges and Lüdenscheid was closed to rail traffic, according to Deutsche Bahn.
