Figures scrutinized under a magnifying glass and astonishing disparities ... More than 12,000 new confirmed cases of Covid-19 were recorded in 24 hours in France where the number of hospitalized patients increased slightly and the number of deaths exceeded 65,000, according to the figures published Sunday by Santé Publique France.

21,000 new cases in 24 hours

The number of recorded cases was 12,489 in 24 hours, against 3,466 on Saturday.

During the holidays, this daily figure has varied enormously since mid-December, fluctuating between some 3,000 and more than 21,000.

But still far, on average, from the government goal of going down to 5,000 cases per day.

The positivity rate, which measures the percentage of people positive for Covid-19 out of all those tested, has been increasing for several days, to 5.2% on Sunday, against 4.6% the day before.

A hundred deaths

With 116 new deaths in hospital in 24 hours, Covid-19 has now caused the death of 65,037 people in France since the start of the epidemic.

The number of patients hospitalized for Covid-19 is 24,780, or 322 more than on Saturday, with 657 new admissions during the day.

The number of patients in intensive care or intensive care is also up slightly, with 2,665, 33 more than on Saturday, with 101 new admissions.
