Vaccines BioNTech will increase production to meet demand for vaccines in the EU
Q & A Practical guide to know everything about vaccination
The
World Health Organization (WHO)
announced on Thursday its first authorization for the emergency use of a vaccine against
Covid-19
, specifically the one developed by the pharmaceutical companies
Pfizer
and
BioNTech
.
The green light for the vaccine, which had already obtained this type of authorization in markets such as the
United States
, the
United Kingdom
or the
European Union
, is used for countries that do not have approval entities for this type of product, so it opens the door to its use especially in developing countries.
The WHO also said in a statement that the authorization will allow the use of the vaccine to agencies such as the
Pan American Health Organization
or
the United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF)
.
The WHO has granted this permission when the pandemic turns one year since
China
notified it of the existence of a new coronavirus, and after experts from the
Geneva-
based agency
reviewed data on safety, efficacy and quality of Pfizer's vaccine / BioNTech.
The organization admitted that this vaccine, with an efficacy of around 95% in clinical trials, presents challenges for its use, due to the need to be stored between 60 and 90 degrees below zero.
"Therefore, the WHO will work to support countries in the development of delivery plans and prepare them for the use (of the vaccine)," he said.
