The voice of Lisbon is no more.

And emotion took hold of all of Portugal.

The death of Carlos do Carmo at the age of 81 is shocking, beyond fans of fado.

The singer was as adored as Amália Rodrigues.

And while he was perhaps a little less well-known internationally than the Diva, Carlos do Carmo had performed on countless stages around the world.

A goldsmith of fado, he loved popular versions as much as poetic interpretations.

The music scene got it right, with tributes coming from all genres and musical styles.

Carlos do Carmo had made a name for himself at the start of his career in the 1960s. But it was undoubtedly his album

Um Homem Na Cidade (A man in the city,

in French) in 1977 which had imposed his style. inimitable.

A remarkable performer, Carlos do Carmo cultivated nonchalance and humor, an artistic and human elegance which made him appreciated by all.

The fadist had received the Grammy Award Latino for his career in 2014, the great Vermeil medal of the city of Paris, and made an officer of the order of merit of his country.

Lisbon, which owes him so much, has declared a day of mourning in his memory.
