  • Study: Mask, distance and cleanliness, keys to making public transport safe

The PRIMA-CoV trial, promoted by the Primavera Sound concert organizer and carried out by the Fight Against AIDS and Infectious Diseases Foundation and the Germans Trias i Pujol University Hospital in Badalona, has randomly studied

the safety conditions that can allow a live music concert to be held

without increasing SARS-CoV-2 infections.

This is a unique trial in the world.

"We wanted to know what was the risk of becoming infected during a concert," said Boris Revollo, co-investigator of the study, at a press conference where the results of the investigation were communicated to the media.

The study is still pending publication in a scientific journal

.

The work was carried out with a control group: of the total of 1,047 participants, 463 entered the concert and 496 did not participate in the event.

All of them were

screened by antigen test

, which was negative, before the concert.

After eight days, the virological analysis was repeated with an RT-PCR test.

None of the 463 attendees in the experimental group was infected by SARS-CoV-2

(incidence 0%; 95% credibility intervals: 0% -0.7%) while in the control group (without access to the concert) 2 of 496 were infected participants (incidence 0.4%; credibility intervals 95%: 0.1% -0.8%).

"These data give us the statistical strength to conclude that

there is no more risk of infection among people who participated in a massive event if the measures

we implement

are followed

," said Revollo.

These measures include, in addition to the antigen test at the entrance, the obligation to wear an

N95 approved mask

, optimization of

ventilation

(air quality and temperature were monitored throughout the event) and

control of movement flows of people

inside the building, secured by security personnel and with specific measures to avoid queues in attendance to the toilets, at the entrance to the concert and at the exit.

However,

no physical distancing was required

during the stay at the concert (with a capacity of 900 people), where

singing and dancing were allowed

.

As the co-investigator of the study Josep Maria Llibre also pointed out, adolescents and elderly people were not included in the research (participation

was limited to people between 18 and 59 years of age, without underlying diseases

and who did not live with elderly people at their home, and had not been diagnosed with Covid in the last 14 days).

"Probably, some of the measures that we have deployed in this study could be saved, but we do not know which ones. Cultural and leisure activities were among those of risk, in particular,

concerts are considered high risk. That is why it is important generate this data

. Everyone is watching this result and in the coming months it is expected that research and programs of this type will be seen. "
