Couturier Pierre Cardin died at the age of 98 on Tuesday.

Known for his pioneering outlook on fashion and his futuristic designs, he received a shower of tributes from the fashion world.

"It was a breath that boosted my imagination", explains the couturier Jean-Charles de Castelbajac.

French fashion designer Pierre Cardin passed away on Tuesday at the age of 98.

Fashion thus loses a forward-looking and popular designer.

Pierre Cardin marked his time with his futuristic creations, his derivative products and his limitless imagination.

"Day of great sadness for all our family, Pierre Cardin is no longer. The great couturier that he was has crossed the century, leaving France and the world a unique artistic heritage in fashion, but not only", wrote his nephews and nieces in a press release.

The couturier has received a large number of tributes, especially from the fashion world.

A visionary "jack of all trades"

"Pierre Cardin was a completely extraordinary man. For him, creation had no partitions, no boundaries between fashion, design or architecture. A breath that boosted my imagination", underlined the couturier Jean -Charles de Castelbajac.

Asked by Europe 1, he explains: "he is a genius jack-of-all-trades, he was inspired by the cosmos, by modernity. When I met him, I found him to be very kind to him. those who would create after him. He also had this ambition to democratize his art. This is how he was a visionary: he considered that there was no creation without an act of diffusion and propagation. creation is totally related to marketing. "

Before many others, Pierre Cardin had opened a "corner" in a large store, made by men.

And had adopted on a large scale a system of licenses which ensured it a distribution in the whole world, affixing its name on products as diverse as ties, cigarettes, perfumes or mineral water.

Chantal Thomass, one of the most famous French stylists, also spoke on BFMTV: "He did great things, he was extremely creative, extremely modern, and different from the rest. He had his style, and that ' was an exciting gentleman ".

A major retrospective was dedicated to him at the end of 2019 in New York, a way to revalue the daring and prejudices taken in advance of his time as a couturier, who was also the first to enter the Academy of Fine Arts in France.

"It is a very great loss for us", reacted Laurent Petigirard, perpetual secretary of this institution.

"A great patron very attached to identifying young talents, he decided in 1993 to create the Pierre Cardin prizes for young artists under 35," he recalled.

On Instagram, the ex-model Carla Bruni also paid tribute to this monument of fashion: "Mr. Pierre Cardin, you left to join your Jeanne and some angels ...", she wrote, referring to the actress Jeanne Moreau, with whom the couturier lived a love affair for four years.
