The GIGN is still on site this Wednesday morning.

Three gendarmes were killed and a fourth injured by a madman in an isolated hamlet near Saint-Just (Puy-de-Dôme) on the night of Tuesday to Wednesday, AFP learned from corroborating sources.

The soldiers, who belonged to Ambert's company, were fatally shot by a 48-year-old man as they tried to rescue a woman who had taken refuge on the roof of a house.

The woman was taken to safety

Shortly after midnight, two gendarmes, alerted for acts of violence against a spouse, were targeted by shots, after trying to approach the house where the threatened woman had taken refuge.

One of them died from his injuries while the second, injured in the thigh, was transported by firefighters to the Ambert hospital center.

After setting fire to his house, the madman again shot the gendarmes present near the house, causing two new victims among the soldiers, confirmed to AFP the Clermont-Ferrand prosecutor's office, which specifies that the woman could be brought to safety.

The GIGN and the firefighters on site

“At least 7 members of the GIGN are on site.

The greatest precautions are taken with regard to the dangerousness of the individual, ”a source close to the investigation told AFP.

The perpetrator of the fatal shots is said to be known for acts related to child custody issues.

Firefighters are on site to try to control the blaze.

"It is a gendarmerie operation which is part of a framework of intra-family violence which has experienced consequences still in development," for its part told AFP the prefecture of Puy-de-Dôme.
