The Funke media group claims to have been the victim of a hacker attack on Tuesday.
"This affects numerous systems nationwide," said a spokesman.
"We are working flat out on the solution." The Essen police determined, as they confirmed on request.
Internet sites such as “WAZ.de” could still be reached.
The spokesman was initially unable to say whether the attack would affect the production of the media group's daily newspapers.
