Lieutenant Charles Carroll Taylor had already had 2500 flight hours behind him when he boarded his US Navy Grumman TBM Avenger torpedo bomber on December 5, 1945.

The 28-year-old flight instructor at the Fort Lauderdale naval base wanted to train four participants in a course in navigation over the sea and attacking with bombs.
