The elected officials of the agglomeration council of Saint-Brieuc had to vote for a procurement for the collection and transport of green algae in the bay when the thorny environmental issue broke out.

Tired of seeing the coast of the town being soiled by these ulva, the mayor of Hillion (Côtes d'Armor) spoke to denounce the situation.

"When you go regularly to the beaches of the fifth bay in the world and you see this little tractor with its small trailer that will make its day, you say to yourself that we are making fun of the world", tackled the mayor , as reported by

The town of Hillion is one of the most affected by green algae.

It was in this small town bordering the bay that a jogger had died in September 2016. His body had been exhumed for an autopsy, without it being possible to determine exactly the causes of death.

It is in this same town that 36 wild boars were killed in 2011. In 2019, the Morieux-Hillion cove concentrated nearly 50% of Brittany's green algae, as shown in the images shot on site below.

"I expect more from the State than the check at the end of the season", tackled Mayor Mickaël Hillion, referring to the financial assistance paid by the State for the collection of algae.

The latter believes that the municipalities are "alone" facing the immensity of the environmental problem.

This year, the quantities of seaweed collected on Breton beaches have fallen by 40%.

This fall is above all linked to the dispersal of strandings, which have hit many mud flats or creeks this year, where machines cannot intervene.

The survey carried out by the Center for Studies and Valorization of Algae (CEVA) showed that the areas covered by green algae washed up in the berries would be 6% lower than the multi-year average.
