According to some studies, Spaniards gain between three and five kilos of weight at Christmas.

Someone might think that this year, with fewer meals and family and work celebrations, the

nougat drama

will be less.

And it could be.

But the truth is that we already demonstrated during the months of confinement that we were very capable of putting on our boots by ourselves, in the privacy of our home.

In fact, during the summer many people

reported having gained between one and three kilos in weight during the months of confinement

.

Therefore, if we add these kilos to those we normally gain at Christmas, it could happen that we plant on January 1, 2021 with seven kilos more than on January 1, 2020!

What can we do to stop the side effects of polvorón?

Well, you are not going to believe it, but despite this, the spirit of Christmas invades me and today I do not come with the intention of embittering the holidays to anyone.

What's more, I have good news.

In my opinion, and for those who like it, the "precious goods" of this time such as ham and cheese are not negotiable.

Not even the typical grandmother's dish.

Neither the nougat.

We are at Christmas and I firmly believe that "once a year does not hurt."

Of course, with a bit of order and concert.

There are several simple steps we can take to avoid reaching January 7 like a boa constrictor.

And they all go through two points:

better plan meals and move daily

.

1. INCOMING: less is more

Perhaps it is better to leave that chef in all of us for another moment and not offer a thousand and one gastronomic experiments and canapés within a meal that will have starters, first and second (with their garnish) and dessert.

Ah!

And then the polvorones that are not missing.

Let's bet on light and healthy starters like these three simple ideas that I propose.

In the first place, the bivalves (mussels, clams, cockles, etc.).

It is a good option to steam them.

If we buy them "canned" it is advisable to choose the "natural" option.

Second, a healthy and classic option on these dates can be seafood (there are cheaper options if it is frozen).

This year my advice is to remove the shellfish already peeled and without shell to avoid the "squeaky" and later handling at the table.

And thirdly, let's also bet on

vegetarian options

: Christmas without meat also exists and we have a lot of great alternatives, which we can also serve in individual portions in the event that we have a non-relative-relative-or-close friend. in the table.

Examples: Small glasses of escalivada, mushrooms with goat cheese, escarole salad with pomegranate, tomato "of the good" seasoned ... Because yes, there is much talk of the "ham of the good" but little of the "tomato of the good".

Why not indulge ourselves at Christmas to buy those "pink tomatoes" that always attract our attention?

2. FIRST

Let's opt for simple options such as consommés, broths, vegetable or fish creams (pumpkin, leeks, mushrooms, seafood, mussels, prawns ...).

The possibilities are endless but without cream to avoid heavy digestion!

The key is to use aromatic spices, such as curry or saffron, to make them different and tasty without resorting to cream.

3. SECONDS

Welcome to the traditional recipe of each home!

Whether it's grandmother's lamb or great-great-grandmother's stuffed turkey, Christmas Eve and Christmas are the perfect times to enjoy them.

The key here will be to accompany our traditional dishes with

minimal garnish or, if possible, with a light garnish

.

There are no more rules.

I insist: it is Christmas.

4. DESSERT

Not everything was going to be joys.

If the Christmas menu is overwhelming, his thing is to "leave us without dessert" or with a fruit-based dessert.

And no, it's not about having a sad "lecture pear" on Christmas Eve.

Some more suggestive ideas can be the pineapple, mango or persimmon carpaccio, the apple carpaccio with peanut butter (to make the cream the peanuts are crushed in the food processor, no more), raspberry sorbet with yogurt, snacks of banana with dark chocolate, orange prepared with mint or yogurt cups with mango and red berries.

Why is it important to choose to skip dessert or to have light desserts?

Because in reality, we can go straight to the nougat, which is already "more than a dessert".

5. PHYSICAL ACTIVITY

We know that the WHO recommends walking 10,000 steps a day, which translates into a distance of seven kilometers.

To put it in perspective, a sedentary person, who does not move at all, walks 3,000 or 4,000 steps a day, so they would have to walk about three times more than usual.

What can we do?

It is not that difficult: a good one hour walk a day can "save Christmas" from the point of view of well-being.

And if we take some time out on these dates, let's remember that it is convenient to do

muscle strengthening activities

(

strength

training) two or more days a week.

We can still take advantage of the holidays to advance the New Year's resolutions.

Who are encouraged?

We can start by asking Santa Claus for some new slippers ... Merry Christmas everyone!
