White Christmas - that could actually become a reality this year, at least in some regions of Germany.

According to the German Weather Service (DWD), the chances are particularly good in the foothills of the Alps and in the mountains.

Because the snow line is expected to be between 400 and 600 meters on the holidays.

However: "In all other areas the signs are more likely to be wet and cold weather," said a DWD meteorologist in Offenbach on Friday.

It is still unclear exactly where sleigh rides and snowball fights will be possible.

Because over the North Atlantic a strong high pressure area is only building up, on the east side of which the current over western and central Europe will turn to northwest over the coming week.

This may cause polar air to travel south.

Before the cold air reaches Germany, however, it has to cross the North Sea - where it warms up.

“From the current point of view, this prevents the onset of winter into the flatlands,” said the meteorologist.

In the coming days, according to the information, there will continue to be a coexistence of cloudy foggy weather and some sunny sections.

It will be comparatively mild locally with up to 15 degrees on Sunday.
