Several inmates were injured in an incident in the Untermaßfeld correctional facility in Thuringia.

According to their own statements, the police are now investigating prison mutiny.

The situation on late Tuesday evening was brought under control within a very short time.

"At no point was there a risk that prisoners could leave the prison premises," said the police.

According to initial findings, a prisoner is said to have felt that he was not being adequately treated medically and therefore initially disregarded instructions from staff in the courtyard of the institution.

"It then rocked up," said a spokesman for the Thuringian Ministry of Justice on Wednesday.

Later there were also riots in detention rooms.

"The staff are very prudent and very good and have got the situation under control," said the spokesman.

The situation in Untermaßfeld prison is now calm.

In a police announcement from the night of Wednesday it was said: "The riot police and other Thuringian agencies were able to arrest the people and lead them back to their cells."

Smoke came from a cell

According to initial investigations, smoke formed in one cell, and two men are said to have suffered smoke inhalation.

Another prisoner was slightly injured when he was arrested by officers.

Pepper spray was also used, and two men suffered slight eye irritation.

One inmate had circulatory problems and had been examined by a doctor.

Thuringia's Minister of Justice, Dirk Adams (Greens), thanked the emergency services that night "for their level-headed and quick intervention".

According to the Ministry of Justice, the prison has 345 places for male prisoners and is designed for prison terms of up to two and a half years.

Prison mutiny is listed as an offense in the Criminal Code.

As a result, this is the case, for example, when prisoners “band together and use combined forces” to coerce or attack prison officials.
