The Munich Cardinal Reinhard Marx already donated 97,000 euros from his private fortune eight years ago for victims of sexual violence.

This is what Marx told the Süddeutsche Zeitung.

In this way, he took over a considerable part of the sum that the Archdiocese of Munich and Freising paid as “recognition for those affected at the time”.

Only ten days ago Marx announced that he would donate another 500,000 euros from his fortune.

The aim is to set up a foundation to help those affected by sexual violence.

The foundation under the name “Spes et Salus” (“Hope and Salvation”) should complement the church's commitment to preventing and coming to terms with suffering, it said.

Marx told the “SZ” that he had heard critical questions such as: “Why does he have so much money?” The answer is very simple: He doesn't spend a lot of money.

"I don't have any expensive hobbies, I buy books, every now and then there has to be a cigar and I have to pay for my living, for my clothes, food and drink."

As archbishop, Marx is paid at grade B 10.

That corresponds to around 13,600 euros a month.

He is also the author of several bestsellers.

Marx has been at the head of the Archdiocese of Munich and Freising for a good twelve years.
