At around 5:30 in the morning on December 13, it was still dark.

Zhang Jing and Guo Yuhan, members of the "Weekend Volunteer Education" service team of Hubei University of Arts and Science, got up early.

After a simple wash, they first took the 512 bus to the passenger station, then transferred to the passenger bus twice, and came to the "Weekend Education" destination-the Love Guidance Center for Left-behind Children in Qifang Town, Zaoyang City, and began a day of volunteer service activity.

Since 2011, this "Weekend Free Education" service team has insisted on coming to Qifang Town, Zaoyang City every weekend and winter and summer vacations to provide homework guidance and family companionship for left-behind children.

Over the past 10 years, more than 500 compulsory education programs have been carried out, benefiting more than 3,000 left-behind children and poor students.

Recently, the team’s "Take Your Hand and Accompany You to Become Talents" precision support project won the Silver Award of the Fifth China Youth Volunteer Service Competition.

When the volunteers came to the counseling center, the two simple classrooms were already full of more than 50 primary and secondary school students. Most of them were left-behind children who lived with their grandparents or grandparents after their parents went out to work.

Seeing the big brothers and sisters coming braving the severe cold weather, the children who were doing their homework at the desk immediately cheered.

"Teacher, it's so cold on the road." "Teacher, I can't solve this problem, so tell me about it." "Teacher, what kind of experiment will be arranged today"...

Afterwards, the four college students were divided into two groups and entered the classroom to start tutoring the children.

In each classroom, the children are of different sizes, from elementary school students from grades one to six and junior high school students from grades seven to ninth.

The tutoring subjects involved Chinese, mathematics, English, geography, history and other subjects. The children raised their hands from time to time to ask questions, and the service team members answered patiently one by one.

When encountering some common problems, the team members walked to the podium to teach collectively.

During the lunch break, the service team members also played table tennis, games, and physics experiments with the children.

It was not until 4:30 in the afternoon that the busy day of service team members bid farewell to the children and set off to return to school.

Service team member Zhang Jing told reporters that he is a native of Qifang Town. Like these left-behind children 10 years ago, he also received help from the "Weekend Volunteer Education" team here.

In 2019, when he was admitted to Hubei University of Arts and Sciences, he joined the caring team for the first time and insisted on coming back every week to carry out volunteer education services.

Sun Guoping, a 52-year-old resident, is the founder of this left-behind children's love counseling center.

Speaking of the original intention of the founding, Sun Guoping said that many parents in Qifang Town work outside all year round and leave their children to the care of the elderly at home.

At first, she wanted to provide the left-behind children with a place to be looked after during winter and summer vacations, so as to prevent them from indulging in games and even going astray in life.

As a result, the abandoned movie theater in the town was rented at an annual rent of more than 1,000 yuan, and left-behind children were admitted for free.

In 2011, as the number of students continued to increase, Sun Guoping was too busy to work alone. In addition to maths and foreign languages above the fourth grade of elementary school, she could not help at all, so she sought help from Hubei University of Arts and Sciences.

Since then, Hubei University of Arts and Science has established a "Weekend Volunteer Education" volunteer service team, which rushes to carry out volunteer education work every weekend and summer and winter assumptions.

Zhan Li, deputy secretary of the Party Committee of the School of Physics and Electronic Engineering of Hubei University of Arts and Science, introduced that since Du Pengfei, a physics student of the 2010 class of the school, has served as the first volunteer team captain, there have been 10 captains and more than 400 team members have taken care of the relay and took root in Zaoyang for 10 years. Qifang Town provides voluntary education support and devotes itself to serving "left-behind children" in Shanxiang.

Among them, volunteers such as Huang Qiang, Wu Shunxi, Xu Shan, and Chen Yanying have also specially compiled teaching materials for left-behind children.

At present, the school has incorporated the "Weekend Volunteer Education" volunteer service team into the precision-helping project, and has formulated a systematic and complete management system to provide vigorous protection from human, material and financial resources, so that the baton of love can be passed on.
