The applause and cheers of doctors and nurses flanked Elena, a 104-year-old woman, who, in a wheelchair, carried a document under her arm that read "Information folder on discharge."

The scene took place in a corridor in the area of the Internal Medicine Service of the Gregorio Marañón Hospital, in Madrid.

With a visible face of satisfaction, the old woman wished aloud: "That things be fixed, health that is not lacking."

After surviving influenza A last year, the second wave of the pandemic has also hit her.

And yet, the battle fought in 2020 has also been the winner.

After being admitted to the hospital for 14 days due to pneumonia caused by the virus

, she has been able to return home.

At her age, she still manages on her own.

As stated by Álvaro Alejandre de Oña, doctor at the Hospital's Internal Medicine Service, Elena is a very active person in her day to day life.

And, precisely, it was her lack of vitality that set off alarms and was valued by her GP.

"Being an older patient, sometimes,

the symptoms are not as expressive as in a young person

. Elena was sick, down. She had a little fever and complained a lot that she could not get out of bed," she explained the specialist.

After confirming her positive for

Covid-19

and detecting pneumonia, Elena was admitted, although during her stay in the hospital she has not required oxygen.

Alejandre has pointed out that "we have had it here mainly because age was a factor that was worrying".

As a treatment to fight the infection, he has been given a corticosteroid.

"For us it has been an honor to take care of Elena. It is a joy for all of us to see a patient like her succeed. It is a disease with many risks -and, on multiple occasions, extremely serious-, but Elena is proof that there are infected people who, even if they are very old, can be cured. For us it is an enormous satisfaction, "says the expert.

Of course, the doctor warns that

the severity of the virus has not decreased

and, despite the fact that infections are decreasing, they have not lowered what is desirable.

"We must be very careful so that, with everyone's responsibility, in January we do not see ourselves as in the first wave," he adds.

Now, at home, Elena has to take care of herself: the doctors recommend that she move around, do some exercise (of course, without doing anything extraordinary).

Alejandre states that when patients, especially older people, are discharged, it is normal for them to be physically

in a somewhat deteriorated state

: "As Elena looks with strength, she will recover her normal life," she clarifies.
