Agents from the French Biodiversity Office (OFB) shot dead this Friday near La Rochelle a wolf that had attacked three flocks of sheep for a month in Charente-Maritime after escaping from a sanctuary with two others beasts, the prefecture announced this Saturday.

The animal was "located" this Friday on the outskirts of the town of Courçon d'Aunis, 30 kilometers east of La Rochelle, halfway through the neighboring department of Deux-Sèvres where the beast originates from. , indicates the prefecture of Charente-Maritime in a press release.

A shot as a last resort

On November 13, three “canis lupus” escaped from the Wolves Sanctuary in Deux-Sèvres, in the commune of Frontenay Rohan-Rohan.

The first was found dead on the road on November 17, probably hit by a vehicle;

a second has never left the vicinity of the sanctuary and a third has wandered as far as Charente-Maritime where he has attacked three farms and killed 18 ewes for a month.

"It was carried out the verification of his chip number, which confirmed that the animal" did indeed come from the Sanctuary, according to the press release from the prefecture.

Friday evening, "in front of the impossibility of approaching it in order to carry out a capture by teleanesthesia", the decision of a lethal shot, "was taken as a last resort, made necessary by the risks incurred, in particular of predation of herds. “, Justifies the prefecture.

Sheep attack

This decision is based on a prefectural decree of December 4 which authorizes the authorized agents of the French Biodiversity Office (OFB) to take “the necessary measures to prevent any risk linked to wolf wandering (...) including means of lethal fire, on the territory of the department ”.

"We know that it is this wolf who attacked the ewes but analyzes will be carried out, in particular on the hairs found on the ewes, to confirm that he is indeed the author of the attacks", specifies the prefecture.
