A controversial Korean director dies of "Covid-19" in Latvia

Kim passed away at the age of 59

The South Korean director Kim Ky-doc, known internationally for his violent cinematic work, and who won several international awards, died in Latvia as a result of complications from his infection with "Covid-19", as announced by an official in the Latvian cinema sector.

"Unfortunately, the news of Kim Ky-Duk's death due to the Corona virus in Latvia is true," Dita Rituma, head of the Latvian National Cinema Center, told AFP.

She pointed out that she had received information from people who remained in contact with the director that he died in a hospital in the capital, Riga, noting that he was on a private visit to Latvia without filming projects.

And local media reported that the 59-year-old director was planning to buy a property in Latvia and apply for residency in this European Union member country.

Kim Ky-Duk has gained international fame through his works that depict human brutality through harsh scenes of violence, and also for his films loaded with symbolic dimensions and meanings, but he has also been accused of adopting inappropriate behavior with some actresses.

The director has never commented on these accusations.

His film "Beta" won the Golden Lion at the 2012 Venice Film Festival.
