Pandemic obliges, this year, the Billboard Women in Music Awards tried to innovate, not only with a virtual retransmission, but also by proposing to personalities which counted this year, and outside the world of music, to give to winning their prize.

It is under these circumstances that the venerable senator Bernie Sanders, unsuccessful candidate for the Democratic primary, found himself on Thursday to present Dua Lipa with the “Powerhouse” prize.

This trophy rewards the artist who had the most impact in sales and streaming.

“What this year has proven, more than anything, is that we cannot go back and do what we have been doing so far.

The winner of the "Powerhouse" award understood it.

She said loud and clear, and demonstrated clearly by her actions, that now is the time to fight for a better future for all.

She fights for young people, women, refugees, the LGBT community and uses her platform to encourage people to participate in the democratic process.

She is using her voice to ask for real change, ”Bernie Sanders said via Zoom.

A speech which obviously touched the artist, who replied that the politician was one of his “heroes”.

Beautiful people

Bernie Sanders was not the only surprise guest at this unprecedented ceremony.

The Woman of the Year award, presented to Cardi B, was indeed presented by Breonna Taylor's mother, Tamika Palmer, who praised the role of the rapper for ensuring that "the truth is told about what happened to Breonna and to reaffirm that black women's lives matter ”.

Thank you @billboard for having us open the show and allowing me to perform a song that means so much to me and that I probably wouldn't have had the chance to perform like this for any other occasion.

“I want to thank everyone and I also want to say to all the girls who are like me, normal girls, when I first came into the music business, I didn't know if people were going to accept me.

Over the years, if you listen to my music, you will hear that I have progressed because I have always wanted this progress.

I want to be the best I can be and I know you can do it too if you give yourself the means, ”Billboard Woman of the Year said in her speech.

Among the other women awarded: Dolly Parton, for the Hitmaker prize, Jennifer Lopez, for the Icon prize, or the young artists Chloe X Halle for the Rising Star prize.
