British actress Barbara Windsor dies

British media reported today, Friday, citing a statement issued by the husband of British actress Barbara Windsor, that the actress, best known for the role of Peggy Mitchell in the series "East Enders", has passed away at the age of 83.

"It is with great sadness that I can confirm that my dear wife Barbara passed away Thursday evening in a London nursing home," Windsor's husband Scott Mitchell said in a statement quoted by the media.

"Her death was due to her suffering from Alzheimer's disease (senile dementia), and Barbara finally passed away peacefully, and she spent the past seven days next to her," he added.

Windsor was diagnosed with the disease in 2014 and moved into a nursing home this year.

She first appeared as Peggy Mitchell in the series in 1994 and stopped working on the series for health reasons in 2003 before returning to it in 2005.

Windsor left the long-running series in 2009 saying she wanted to spend more time with her husband, whom she married in 2000.

Before East Ends, Windsor was mostly known as a comedian.

Her first appearance as an actress was in the 1954 movie "The Bells of St. Trinian".
