• Direct: Last minute of the coronavirus in Spain

Daily infections continue to decline.

The Ministry of Health has registered in its daily report released this Thursday

7,955 new infected

since yesterday, the lowest figure since last October 18, almost two months ago, when 7,118 were notified.

It is also data that, in line with those published in the last week, reflects the progressive weak drag of this second wave.

Thus, the total number of Spaniards infected by the virus since the beginning of the pandemic is 1,720,056.

Of the almost 8,000 diagnostic tests confirmed today, 4,595 correspond to the last 24 hours (the rest were performed in previous days, but the positive had not yet been reported).

More than half of them are located in Madrid (1,373) and Catalonia (1,137).

The figures for these two communities are very far from those of the rest.

The third region with the most infections is the Basque Country (337).

Spain continues in a

"very complicated" situation

, according to Fernando Simón, director of the Center for the Coordination of Health Alerts and Emergencies, at a press conference.

Evolution is good, but it is slowly improving, he said.

"The indicators improve little by little, but maintaining a 22% occupancy in hospitals with a single disease" is outrageous, "he assured. The Accumulated Incidence (number of cases per 100,000 inhabitants) continues to decline and stands at this Thursday at 188. Yesterday, the cumulative incidence rate fell below the symbolic threshold of 200 infections.

"We are in a phase of decline,

after having been in very high incidents

", has summarized Fernando Simón in his last appearance of a week that has seen the control of the second wave consolidated in Spain.

The situation, however, continues to be dangerous:

"We are still in high risk situations,"

the Health spokesman warned.

"We are still experiencing incidents well above what is desirable."

"Spain is, probably, the country that maintains a lower incidence rate within the countries of the European Union, and of the Europeans", has contrasted Simón.

"Its trend is similar to ours, but with a much higher level of risk," he said about neighboring countries.

"The difference is that they started the increase a little later", clarified the epidemiologist, to conclude: "Although we started the second wave, before the rest of European countries, we also started to control it before other European countries."

The Health spokesman has

also warned of "a possible third wave"

after the Christmas holidays.

He has warned, therefore, that "any mistake can involve exponential increases that are very difficult to control."

On the objective of reducing transmission to 25 cases of incidence in 14 days, Simón has admitted:

"It is possible. But it is not likely

.

"

"We are likely to be low, below 100, but we will probably not be at 25 cases per 100,000 when we start vaccinating ... It is very difficult, very unlikely that we will get there."

However, he considered that the ideal would be to

lower the incidence as much as possible

to avoid a "third wave".

Deaths continue to exceed 300 a day

Despite the improvement in data,

deaths continue to exceed 300 per day

.

Health has reported

325 in the last day

, which

are added to the global figure

since the beginning of this crisis: 47,344 (in the absence of integrating the deceased in residences).

With a death date in the last week, the count has recorded 765 deaths.

Andalusia remains in the lead and accumulates 128 in this period of time (although it still does not exceed 200 deaths, which did happen until several days ago).

Castilla y León is also

above one hundred

, which has 109;

community closely followed by Asturias, which records 98. Aragón, already at a further distance, scores 76;

Valencia, 71;

Catalonia, 48;

the Basque Country, 44;

Galicia, 42;

Castilla La Mancha, 27;

Madrid, 26;

Extremadura, 20;

Navarra, 19;

Murcia, 18;

Cantabria, 17;

and La Rioja, 13. Likewise, the regions with

less than ten deaths

in the last seven days are the Canary Islands, which reports eight;

and the Balearic Islands, which communicates one.

Finally, Melilla and Ceuta do not score any.

Regarding the cumulative incidence (AI) -number of cases diagnosed per 100,000 inhabitants in the last 14 days- it has continued since yesterday,

below 200 infections

.

Specifically, it stands at 188, the Communities with the highest rate being the Basque Country (277), Cantabria (257), Asturias and La Rioja (250 both).

More than half of the regions already mark an AI below 200 positives: Andalusia, the Canary Islands, Catalonia, Ceuta, Valencia, Extremadura, Galicia, Madrid, Murcia and Navarra.

Of course, only the Canary Islands still have a level below 100 (although it has been rising slightly for a few days).

Hospitalizations

Regarding hospitalizations, 2,075 infected patients have been admitted in the last week, 200 more than in the previous one.

Andalusia continues to stand out

above the rest of the communities (323).

Behind are Valencia (253), Castilla y León (246), Aragón (179) and Galicia (178).

However, if we attend to all patients hospitalized for the virus, the established order is different.

In this case, Catalonia is the region that scores the most patients (2,582), followed by Madrid (1,629) and Andalusia (1,526).

Valencia is also

located above a thousand

(1,200).

The four communities concentrate more than half of the admitted patients, which are 11,965 (on Wednesday, 12,158).

Of the 2,075 hospitalized in the last seven days, 174 were transferred to intensive care and 155 since yesterday.

In this way, there are already 16,928 patients who have required the services of this hospital unit since the start of the pandemic.

At the European level, Spain continues in

fifth place in terms of infections

, behind Russia (2,541,199), France (2,324,216), Italy (1,770,149) and the United Kingdom (1,766,819).

Just after Spain and also with more than a million cases are Germany (1,242,203) and Poland (1,076,180).

The United Kingdom also remains in the lead in the parameter of the deceased, whose total increases to 62,566.

The country in second position is Italy, which recently reported 61,739.

France, for its part, scores 56,648, ahead of Spain, which, as already mentioned, records 47,344.

Regarding the AI of the continent's countries, Sweden's rate remains the most prominent and the only one with more than 700 positives (705, specifically).

With an incidence greater than 500 positives are Turkey (501), whose AI has shot up in the last week (just seven days ago, its index marked 104 infections);

Czechia (516), Switzerland (626), Portugal (565) and Austria (590).

As in recent days, our country is in second place from

behind

,

only behind Ireland

(76).

Antigen test

At the press conference in which he evaluated the data of the pandemic, Simón also spoke about the possibility of doing antigen tests in the pharmacy.

Along with the problems he has already referred to on other occasions, such as the need to

have a specific circuit

and determine what kind of qualified personnel would be in charge of the procedure, he has warned: "A positive person cannot go home safely", since the contagion would have to be notified and the patient isolated.

In addition, some negative results "

could not be true negatives

, and people who shouldn't be allowed to go," argued Simón, who recalled that several scientific associations have taken a position against this proposal.

He has insisted, therefore, that "there are things to work on beforehand"

before giving the green light to the tests in pharmacies

, although he has implied that the decision "is not technical" and does not correspond to his department.
