Motorway toll prices are expected to increase on average by 0.44% on February 1, 2021, according to figures provided on Friday by dealers to the Road Network Users Committee.

The increases should range between 0.30% and 0.65% for the largest networks, with an average of around 0.44%, said the users' committee, confirming information from the Caradisiac site.

The average increase was 0.80% in 2020 and 1.9% at the start of 2019.

The government has yet to approve these new tariffs.

If all the dealers have not yet communicated their figures, the final increase should not exceed this average of 0.44%, said the Association of French Motorway Companies (ASFA).

Highlighting the very degraded economic context and almost zero inflation, the Road Network Users' Committee opposed this increase, for the first time since its creation in 2009.

An almost automatic increase

"We have called on the motorway companies to make the effort, out of solidarity, not to demand an increase in tariffs", indicated the president of the Users' Committee, François Bordry.

But the opinion of the committee, composed of representatives of the administration, transporters, motorists, and environmental protection associations, is only advisory.

The very strict contracts binding the motorway companies to the State provide for an automatic increase in toll prices every year on February 1, depending in particular on inflation and the work undertaken on the network.

At the beginning of 2019, in the midst of the “yellow vests” challenge, the government had requested and obtained after “intense discussions” with the motorway companies a reduction of 30% for regular drivers, in the absence of lower prices for all.

The government had ruled out a freeze on tolls that would have had to be caught up later, as the former Minister of Ecology Ségolène Royal had decided in 2015.
