An electronic document to certify that a person has been vaccinated?

This is the solution that the European branch of the World Health Organization (WHO) thinks about, we learned on Thursday.

"We are looking very closely at the use of technology in the fight against Covid-19, and one of them is to work with member states on something called electronic vaccination certificate," said an expert from WHO Europe, Siddhartha Datta, during an online press briefing.

Not an immunity passport

Such a certificate, which would make it possible to identify and monitor the people vaccinated, is not finalized and will have to be drawn up in accordance with national laws, he said.

It is not an immunity passport, supposed to ensure that its carrier is protected against the disease because he has already been affected and cured.

"We do not recommend immunity passports," said Catherine Smallwood, in charge of emergency situations.

On Wednesday, the United Kingdom was the first country in the world to approve the Pfizer / BioNTech vaccine against Covid-19, on which the European Medicines Agency is due to vote on December 29 at the latest.

Europe still contaminated

The WHO's Europe zone, which includes 53 countries including Russia, has recorded more than 19.3 million cases and more than 433,000 deaths since the start of the pandemic, according to the organization's surveillance table.

1.5 million cases have been identified in the past seven days.

“If we see a slight decrease in the number of cases in Western Europe, this does not mean that the WHO European region as a whole is facing an improvement in the epidemiological situation (…), with the most affected countries being now in central and southern Europe ”, noted the head of the WHO-Europe Hans Kluge, who called on governments not to let their guard down.

In the event of a drop in contamination, we must "consider strengthening public health infrastructure and prepare for the next wave", he said.
