Changes in the business model and content. Cinema is dying: will entertainment end with the seventh art?
AT&T Inc. Warner Bros announced this Thursday that it will release all its 2021 films in theaters and
on the HBO Max streaming service starting the same day
, which means an unprecedented change that justifies in response to a drop in influx to the rooms due to the coronavirus pandemic.
These films with simultaneous release in the theater and online include "Godzilla vs. Kong", "Mortal Kombat", The Suicide Squad ", a remake of" Dune "and
the long-awaited sequel to the" Matrix "trilogy
. All will be available on HBO Max for a month from the same day it is released in theaters, the company has assured in a statement.
Big studios have long pushed for their movies to be seen in homes before what was until now the usual 90-day period when they were only exploited in theaters.
An idea that the owners of this distribution channel resisted.
Following the announcement, shares in AMC Entertainment, the world's largest theater operator, fell 12% and rival Cinemark by 10%.
Warner Bros executives assure that their new strategy is limited to next year and is due to the fact that
the Covid-19 pandemic has forced
many cinemas to close.
"No one wants movies to return to the big screen more than we do," said Ann Sarnoff, President and CEO of WarnerMedia Studios and Networks Group.
"We know that new content is the lifeblood of theatrical show but we have to balance that with the reality that the majority of theaters in the United States will likely be operating at reduced capacity in 2021."
Last month, theater owner Cinemark reached an agreement with Universal Pictures that accepts streaming viewing 17 days after the theatrical release.
This agreement is similar to another from the same study with AMC.
