The writer Alberto Olmos received the

1st David Gistau Journalism Prize

on Thursday

at an event held at the headquarters of the Vocento group in Madrid.

This award, jointly organized by Vocento and Unidad Editorial, was created to recognize and support the quality, independent, honest and courageous columnism represented by the figure of journalist David Gistau, who died in January of this year.

"I celebrate this initiative created to make the figure of David Gistau last," said the winner in his speech of appreciation.

The award ceremony, which was held with limited capacity and with respect for all health security measures imposed by the pandemic, was attended by political personalities such as the mayor of Madrid José Luis Martínez Almeida, or Andrea Levy, delegate of Culture, Tourism and Sports of the capital, and other areas of the cultural and social panorama.

Among those present were Florentino Pérez, president of the ACS group and Real Madrid or Rodrigo Echenique, vice president of Banco Santander, among others.

Representing the media sector were, among others, Antonio Fernández-Galiano, president of Unidad Editorial;

Aurelio Fernández, general director of Publications of the EL MUNDO publishing group;

Ignacio Ybarra, president of Vocento;

Luis Enríquez, CEO of that group;

Francisco Rosell, director of EL MUNDO;

and Julián Quirós, director of 'Abc'.

The event began with the broadcast of a video in which

and the values ​​he embodied as a journalist: "independence", "struggle", "daring", "commitment", "courage" and "vocation" .

The presenter of the event, journalist Susanna Griso, emphasized the "quality, honest and courageous journalism" to which this award aims to give continuity.

Luis Enríquez and Antonio Fernández-Galiano then took the floor.

During his speech, the president of Unidad Editorial highlighted David Gistau's "committed journalism" and warned that journalism is more necessary than ever.

"Society needs reliable references at a time when populism tries to manipulate everything," he

said.

"One misses every day how David could tell us what we see these days," said Fernández-Galiano: "He should have told us what is happening in the midst of the pandemic from his acute point of view."

The president of Unidad Editorial stressed that "the hole left by David is tremendous."

For this reason, he declared: "I hope that this award contributes to filling that space."

For his part, Luis Enríquez made an emotional speech in which he highlighted the personal qualities of David Gistau and in which he reviewed some of the most relevant moments of his professional life.

"That's what journalists do," he concluded, before quoting one of Gistau's texts: "I have been free to write. I hope you have not taken me too seriously or too jokingly. Okay?"

The president of the jury, the journalist Pedro García Cuartango, also spoke at the event, who in his memory of David Gistau stressed that "he was a formidable journalist with his own voice, with a dazzling sense of metaphor and a great creator of language. It was transparent and was shown as it was in all its columns. "

Before proceeding to deliver the award to Olmos, Romina Caponnetto, David Gistau's wife, addressed those present at the event to express her gratitude for all the love and support she has received since her husband died.

"When one gives, one receives. David's generosity was so great that it is also yours," she summarized excitedly.

"This award honors journalism that does not have chains or debts with anyone," he

proclaimed: "The one that is written after walking and walking with many people and is published independently, sometimes through thick and thin. The one that does not want to indoctrinate but expose".

In this first edition, the jury recognized Alberto Olmos' article 'Things the poor should know: instructions for when you lose everything', published in 'El Confidencial' on May 13.

The award, endowed with 10,000 euros and a screenprint by the artist Alberto Corazón, is sponsored by Fundación ACS, Mapfre, Santander and Telefónica.

Rosa Belmonte, José Luis Garci, Luis Herrero and Pedro García Cuartango, representing Vocento, and Emilia Landaluce, Jorge Bustos, Antonio Lucas and Rafa Latorre, representing Unidad Editorial, have been the jurors of the David Gistau Columnism Award in this first edition.

In his speech of thanks, Olmos stressed that "Gistau was funny, which is the only thing that should be required of a columnist," and stressed that he "always filled the columns with good vibes."

Before saying goodbye, he said gratefully: "Your name, converted into an award, honors me by making mine your companion."

The act was closed by the mayor of Madrid, José Luis Martínez-Almeida, who valued the figure of David Gistau, a chronicler whose "stark, direct and unapologetic journalism hit you", and also the work of the press editors : "To combat misinformation, we must not weaken the control that the media should exercise with any 'ministry of truth', but rather strengthen it."
