In the former German colony of Namibia, there is now a politician with an unusual name on the National Council - Adolf Hitler Uunona.

The Namibian from the ruling Swapo party was elected district administrator of Ompundja, a constituency in the north of the country, in regional elections.

He was sworn in in his office on Wednesday, a video showed.

In an interview with "Bild" Uunona explained the background of his name.

“My father named me after this man.

He probably didn't understand what Adolf Hitler stood for.

For me that was a normal name as a child.

It was not until I was growing up that I realized that this man wanted to subjugate the whole world.

I have nothing to do with any of these things ”.

His wife called him Adolf, he himself usually appeared in public as Adolf Uunona, leaving out "Hitler".

From 1884 to 1915 parts of Namibia belonged to the Empire.

At that time, the colonial rulers brutally suppressed uprisings by the Herero and Nama ethnic groups, tens of thousands died.

To this day, the relationship between Namibia and Germany is not an easy one - the federal government has been holding tough talks with Windhoek for years about coming to terms with the crimes of the colonial era.
