The EU health authority ECDC has strongly advised against loosening the corona restrictions in Europe too quickly.

"I would like to underline that there is no evidence that measures to protect public health can be relaxed," said ECDC Director Andrea Ammon on Wednesday in a video conference of EU health ministers.

If the requirements were relaxed shortly before Christmas, there could be an increase in hospital admissions in the first week of January.

If the restrictions were lifted earlier, it could even happen during the Christmas holidays, Ammon said.

"Now is not the time to relax the measures," she affirmed.

EU Health Commissioner Stella Kyriakides made a similar statement.

"Relaxing measures too soon can lead to more cases," she said.

Until a vaccine is widely available, measures to contain infections must be maintained.

5,000 people are currently dying to or with the coronavirus in Europe every day, said Kyriakides.
