• Covid-19 This is how the battle between Pfizer and Moderna for the vaccine began

The first vaccines against the Coronavirus, produced by Pfizer and BioNTech, will arrive in British hospitals on December 7 and will receive the approval of the health authorities in a matter of days, according to The Guardian.

The directors of the hospitals of

the National Health Service (NHS)

have received a notification informing the arrival of the first doses within ten days.

The vaccine will be provided in the first instance to health personnel, followed by

workers in residences and those over eighty years of age

.

The nature of the vaccine manufactured in Belgium - which loses its effectiveness after successive shipments and needs to be stored at temperatures of 70 degrees below zero - will in principle make it difficult to spread to the common population.

"We have been told to look forward to the arrival of the vaccine on December 7 and to plan to start administering it to healthcare personnel," the chief executive of a British hospital told The Guardian.

"The original plan was to start in the residences, but the nature of the vaccine means that it has to

be used in five days and cannot be transferred again

."

Pfizer and BioNTech are leading the way in the race for the Covid vaccine and were the first to announce on November 9 a 95% success rate in trials, with

minor side effects and no major safety risks

.

The companies requested authorization for its emergency use in both the United States and the European Union, and it is estimated that they will have the green light in mid-December.

The announcement of the priority destination of the vaccine to health personnel, ahead of the risk group of those over 80 years of age and workers in nursing homes, are creating controversy in the United Kingdom.

As The Guardian anticipates, the residences will probably have to wait for the production of the vaccine from

AstarZeneca

and the University of Oxford, with less difficulties for its storage and administration.

The British Government has ordered doses of up to six different types of vaccines, with preference for the

100 million units of the Oxford vaccine

.

Boris Johnson believes that a start of vaccinations before Christmas would be a success in the battle against Covid, which has claimed 57,551 victims in the United Kingdom, 521 of them in the last 24 hours.

The 'premier' is under pressure from at least 70 Conservative Party deputies who threaten to torpedo his plans to impose the controversial triple alert system that would in fact lead to a prolongation of confinement in large areas of northern England.
