A toddler stuck in the bathtub drain triggered an elaborate rescue operation in Werne, North Rhine-Westphalia.

The child had stuck his index finger into the perforated drain pan of the tub on the Sunday after the bath and was then stuck in it, as the volunteer fire department announced on Monday.

Accordingly, the toddler got caught while his sibling was dried off.

The men from the Werne volunteer fire brigade first dismantled the drain pan from the bathtub.

But the finger was still stuck in the hole.

Since the shell was made of hardened chrome steel, light tools were not enough to "loosen the already severely swollen finger", it said.

However, the child, who had previously been screaming loudly, was able to calm down quickly on his mother's arm.

Because the fire brigade's tools were not filigree enough to free the finger, it was decided to take the girl to a nearby children's clinic in an ambulance.

"It was also important to us that the doctors there have more options, for example to anesthetize the finger," said a spokesman for the fire department on Monday.

Eleven firefighters with four vehicles were deployed for the half-hour mission.

“Of course, we are all particularly sensitive to such emergencies involving children.

Something like this is an exceptional situation for families too, ”reported the spokesman.
