Open air: eight secret routes through the Sierra de Madrid
With autumn, one of the best moments to enjoy
cycling
comes to Mallorca
.
The island is a reference destination for lovers of this sport thanks to its
orography
and its pleasant
Mediterranean climate.
In order for cycling on the island to be carried out in the safest way and to improve the cyclist's experience, the Consell de Mallorca has created the Plan de Vías Ciclistas (PVCM) that classifies
roads and paths
into non-recommended routes, suitable routes and Preferred roads according to the degree of security and traffic.
In total,
16 routes
that cover the entire island, with a length of 1,732 kilometers that connect the main points of interest in Mallorca such as its towns, its lighthouses, its hermitages and the great mountain system that is the
Sierra de Tramuntana.
Here we highlight four of those itineraries:
Formentor lighthouse
This route of
medium difficulty
aims at the spectacular Formentor lighthouse, located on the northernmost cliff of the island.
It begins in the town of
Alcudia
towards
Puerto de Pollença
bordering the coastline of the Bay of Pollença and the Natural Reserve of S'Albufereta.
From the port it goes to the Lighthouse of Formentor through one of the
most panoramic roads
on the island.
The itinerary continues along the Vell de Campanet path, where the Ses Fonts Ufanes Natural Monument, the
Campanet caves
and the Sant Miquel oratory are located.
Sa Calobra road
With a
very high
level of
difficulty, it
is only suitable for trained athletes, a preferred target for thousands of European cyclists.

Alcudia is the starting point and, leaving the town of Pollença behind, begins the ascent of the first
mountain pass
, Coll de Femenia, continuing through Escorca and the Cals Reis coll, which leads to a vertiginous descent to the port of Sa Calobra, located next to the Natural Monument of the
torrent
de Pareis.

Andratx
The Andratx route (C1), with an
easy
level of
difficulty,
is the most affordable route that connects the
Calvià coast
with different villages, among which the nucleus of S'Arracó and its modernist architecture and the towns of Calvià and Capdellà stand out. , with samples of traditional architecture.
The tour takes place along the coast allowing the cyclist to connect through cosmopolitan tourist areas such as the
port of Andratx, Peguera and Santa Ponça.
They are Carrió
Through the Son Carrió route (M3), with a
high
level of
difficulty, you
can access two of the most privileged viewpoints on the island located in the Levante mountains, the Betlem hermitage (Artà) and the Sant Salvador sanctuary (Felanitx).
The route begins in
Cala Millor
and reaches the hermitage of Betlem through the towns of Son Servera and Artà after overcoming a small mountain pass, Coll des Pescadors.

The itinerary continues along secondary roads with little traffic, continuing through Manacor and Felanitx, where the ascent to Sant Salvador begins, of five kilometers and a slope of 7%.
The return is made by roads near the eastern coast, passing through Porto Cristo, one of the main tourist attractions on the island due to the presence of the famous
Drac caves.
