A white silk shoe that belonged to Queen Marie-Antoinette was auctioned this Sunday for 43,750 euros, announced the Versailles auction house Osenat.

This shoe is "silk on the front third and kid goat on the back three quarters", with "four superimposed pleated ribbons" on the top, a leather sole and a "heel covered with gray patent skin" of 4.7 cm. tall, described Osenat.

It measures 22.5 cm in length, which nowadays roughly corresponds to a size 36. It would have been given to Marie-Emilie Leschevin de Prévoisin, close friend of Madame Campan, the Queen's first maid.

It would then have been kept from the end of the 18th century by the descendants of this woman who died in 1816, until this sale.

“Strong interest” from collectors

Thanks to the "keen interest" of "international collectors", according to Osenat, the price obtained is far higher than the estimate of 8,000 to 10,000 euros.

The figure of the queen of Austrian origin, beheaded under the Terror in 1793, like her husband Louis XVI, continues to fascinate the whole world.

This Sunday's auction also allowed the Réunion des Musées Nationaux to preempt an 1824 painting signed François-Jean Garneray, “Molière honored by Louis XIV”.

The public establishment paid 75,000 euros for the benefit of the Comédie Française, this “rare performance of Molière and Louis XIV”, where the Sun King invites the famous actor and playwright to his table.
