American tourist Wesley Barnes is already out of Thailand.

This week he left the Asian country after publicly apologizing to the hotel for which he wrote a bad review.

Everything seemed to indicate that the Sea View Resort & Spa on Koh Chang had won the battle, but it was the

Tripadvisor

portal

that wanted to have

the last word.

From now on, all travelers looking for information about this Thai luxury hotel on the travel giant will see an ad that

The New York Times

has called unpublished in which it is warned that this accommodation had a foreign tourist arrested and imprisoned for criticizing him.

Tripadvisor has hoped that Barnes was safe to take this action.

"This hotel or individuals associated with this hotel have brought criminal charges against a Tripadvisor user for reviews he wrote and posted online," the warning reads.

"As a result, this person spent time in jail."

The travel portal assures that this is "the first case of which we are aware that one of our members goes to jail for publishing a review on our website."

A 15 dollar cork

The unusual controversy stems from an argument Barnes had last June while on vacation at the resort.

The American complains to a hotel employee about the high price of the cork (15 dollars) that they have charged him.

He rectifies it by removing it from his account but is later wronged by a superior.

This leads Barnes to post a negative review of the hotel.

The next thing is that the American is arrested in September and spends two nights in jail while trying to post bail.

The Sea View Resort charges him with

libel

.

They ask for him no less than two years and a fine of $ 6,300 (about 5,400 euros).

Tripadvisor notes that the hotel "may have been exercising its legal rights" under the anti-defamation laws of Thailand, but that it is "their duty to inform the traveler so that he or

she takes it into consideration

when preparing their trip."
