  • Auvergne Rhône-Alpes is the region most affected by the coronavirus epidemic.

  • To assess caregivers in hospitals and nursing homes, human reinforcements are needed.

  • President LR of the Auvergne Rhône-Alpes region in particular announced the rapid mobilization of student nurses and job seekers recently trained in the profession of nursing assistant.

“The hospital peak is still ahead of us.

Hospitals and retirement homes need reinforcements ”.

This Thursday morning, President LR of the Auvergne Rhône-Alpes region, the most affected by the Covid-19 epidemic, announced emergency measures to come to the aid of nursing staff.

An action plan set up with the Regional Health Agency and Pôle Emploi.

“Unlike the first wave, during which there was a lack of material, this time there is material but a real lack and exhaustion of personnel.

The objective is to be able to initiate a general mobilization to provide reinforcements, ”added Laurent Wauquiez.

To strengthen and support teams in hospitals and nursing homes, faced with a strong influx of patients for several weeks, students of nursing schools will be called upon.

"We aim to mobilize 4,000 students right away and, as I speak to you, it has already started," he says.

These students, volunteers to participate in helping caregivers, will be paid and assigned most often as caregivers in non-Covid units, thus freeing up staff for coronavirus patients.

Student nurses recruited to help

"They are recognized, paid and integrated by the teams", underlines Yannick Neuder, cardiologist at Grenoble University Hospital and vice-president of the region, delegate for higher education, research, innovation, European funds and health .

Volunteers will thus be hired with a work contract of a maximum of one month and will be paid up to the minimum wage.

“The teams need us.

So if we can go, we have to.

They do not hire us to send us to the front and put us in difficulty, ”testified this Thursday alongside Laurent Wauquiez Florine, mobilized on the first wave when she had not yet graduated.

After some apprehension, the young girl, who joined the cardiological service in Grenoble at the start of the crisis, had a "very enriching" experience.

“I arrived as a caregiver.

As I was there to help, the whole team integrated me well and trained me (…) When everything is behind us, we can say that we have made a contribution to the building ”, confides this nurse. , now stationed at the Mother Child Hospital in Bron.

To relieve the teams in place, the region will also play on the training component for which it has jurisdiction.

“We have decided to suspend the continuing training of nursing staff for two months.

This enabled us to repatriate 600 people to the services as of last week, ”continues Laurent Wauquiez.

These nurses, who had time to leave their posts to specialize, will resume their training as soon as the crisis is over, "without consequence on their income or the validation of their achievements", assures the region.

Unemployed people to the rescue

Finally, in-depth work has been undertaken with Pôle emploi to appeal to the unemployed who have skills in the health sector or who are willing to take part in training.

From the first wave, the region indicated that it had "pointed out job seekers" who wanted, through retraining for example, to train to become a nursing aide.

Four hundred people have since been trained and are now operational to join the staff of hospitals, clinics and retirement homes, according to Laurent Wauquiez.

Out of 3,000 nurses and 500 doctors currently registered with unemployment insurance in Auvergne Rhône-Alpes, 500 nurses and 50 doctors would also be available and immediately mobilized.

By the end of the week, the region hopes to be able to count on 5,000 reinforcements who will undoubtedly be assigned as a priority in the four departments where the epidemic is breaking records.

Namely Loire and Haute-Loire, Savoie and Haute-Savoie.

“We still have a small reserve steering wheel in case the peak is even higher than what we fear,” concludes Laurent Wauquiez.
