Purchase. Spain allocates Pfizer-BioNTech vaccines before the EU closes the purchase
Research: Pfizer's coronavirus vaccine is not just American, it was born by two researchers of Turkish origin in Germany
The Russian
Sputnik V
vaccine
is 92% effective against Covid-19, based on the results of interim trials, the Health Ministry reported on Wednesday, as
Moscow
rushes to keep pace with Western drug manufacturers in the race for a vaccine.
The initial results are the second to be published of a human trial of the
Covid-19
vaccine
, after the American-German Pfizer revealed more than 90% effectiveness in its prototype in phase 3 trials.
Russia registered its
Covid-19
vaccine
for public use in August, the first country to do so, although approval came before the start of the large-scale trial in September.
"We are demonstrating, based on the data, we have a very effective vaccine ,
" said the director of
RDIF
,
Kirill Dmitriev
, and added that it
is the kind of news that developers of the vaccine speak one day with his grandchildren.
Interim results are based on data from the first 16,000 trial participants who received both injections of the two-dose vaccine, the
Russian Direct Investment Fund (RDIF)
, which has been endorsing the vaccine and marketing it globally, it said.
The interim analysis was performed after 20 trial participants developed
Covid-19
and examining how many had received the vaccine compared to a placebo.
This is significantly lower than the 94 infections in a vaccine trial being developed by Pfizer Inc and BioNTech.
To confirm the efficacy rate, Pfizer said it would continue its trial until there were 164 cases of
Covid-19
.
The Russian trial will continue for a further six months, the RDIF has said in a statement, and the trial data will also be published in a leading international medical journal after peer review.
