British expert heralds several vaccines in 2021: A normal life in the spring

A scientific advisor in the British government announced Tuesday that "two or three vaccines" against the emerging corona virus may become available early 2021, allowing the possibility of returning to a more normal life in the spring.

"I would not be surprised if the new year begins with the availability of two or three vaccines that can be distributed," said John Bell, professor of medicine at Oxford University and a member of the scientific committee that makes recommendations to the government during the health crisis.

He added before a parliamentary committee, "I am very optimistic about distributing enough vaccines in the first quarter of next year, so that things will start to look more natural by spring than they are now."

He added that the chances of obtaining this scenario ranged between 70 and 80%.

These statements came a day after the US pharmaceutical group "Pfizer" and its German partner "Biontech" announced that their vaccine against Covid-19 reduces by 90% the risk of infection with the virus, which revived great hopes in the world.

These are preliminary results from experiments that are still ongoing on a large scale.

Currently, ten vaccines are being developed in the world and are in the third stage of advanced research, where their effectiveness is tested on a large scale on thousands of volunteers.

Britain, which is among the worst affected countries, with more than 49,000 deaths and 1.2 million infected, has recommended 40 million doses of Pfizer vaccine that may be approved for use within three weeks, according to Professor John Bell.

He stressed, "I think we will be ready in mid-December to start the vaccination."
