  • A 3-year-old child died of meningitis on Sunday and another child attending school in the same class in Floirac, near Bordeaux, is hospitalized.

  • The ARS has set up a protocol for children who have been in close contact with the victim, a preventive antibiotic treatment has been prescribed to them.

A 3-year-old child died this Sunday in Bordeaux from meningococcal meningitis, a notifiable disease for which there is a specific protocol deployed by the regional health agency (ARS).

About ten cases are identified each year in France.

The situation is "under control", says the ARS.

The little one was in a nursery school in Floirac and another child in his class developed symptoms and had to be hospitalized.

The news concerning him is nevertheless reassuring according to Sylvie Quelet, director of prevention at Public Health France and responsible for alerts of the Regional Health Agency of Bordeaux.

It is not yet clear whether this second child has the same form of bacterial meningitis.

We will have to wait for the results of his test to know if it is the same germ.

Preventive treatment for contact children

The transmission is by droplets of saliva during close and prolonged contact, that is to say of more than an hour at less than a meter of distance.

The risks of contagion are therefore considered low.

"We count the children with whom he has been in close contact in the last ten days: in his class, in the dormitory and during activities at the leisure center," explains Sylvie Quelet.

We held an information meeting with the parents of the students to explain to them that they had to administer prophylactic antibiotics to their children.

And, we gave a prescription to those who couldn't get a quick appointment with their doctor ”.

The ARS wants to reassure parents, stressing that this prevention is effective and that we are "on something circumscribed".

This type of meningitis most often occurs in young children under five and in adolescents.

Cases in adults are much rarer.
