According to AFP, the letter hidden in an aluminum capsule was accidentally discovered in the area of the Ingersheim commune by a walking couple.

The capsule contained a handwritten text in German, which was deciphered at the local museum.

It is assumed that the letter in the summer of 1910 was sent by an infantry regiment officer to his commander and concerned maneuvers in Alsace, then part of the German Empire.

In total, four copies of the letter were sent, but one of them for some unknown reason was lost by the carrier pigeon.

The 2020 find was exhibited at the museum.

Earlier it was reported that the most expensive carrier pigeon in the world was sold at an auction in Belgium for a record amount of € 1.252 million.
