On the 9th, a giraffe child who had a leg disorder at a zoo in Hiroshima City and was practicing walking with a brace removed the brace and started walking with his own foot.

Hagumi, a female giraffe born in Asa Zoo in Hiroshima City, has been unable to stand on her own due to disabilities in both hind legs since she was born in April.

At the zoo, with the cooperation of a prosthetist who makes human prostheses, I put the orthosis on Hagumi's leg and started walking.

In the middle of last month, following the removal of the left foot brace, on the 9th, I decided to remove the remaining right foot brace, and from around 2:00 pm, the breeder and veterinarian started working while calling out to Hagumi.

While watching over Tetsuo Yamada, a prosthetist who made the orthosis, the orthosis came off in less than 5 minutes, and Hagumi stepped on the ground with her own feet for the first time in her life.

Mr. Yamada said, "I think the ultimate goal is to run around without equipment like other giraffes. I don't think I can feel relieved by that point, but I want to keep an eye on it."

Shiho Domen, who is in charge of breeding, said, "I'm finally here. I'm afraid that I'll have pain and swelling in my legs after tomorrow, but I'm glad I finally got it off."

At the zoo, I will gradually put them out on the playground while watching the state of Hagumi.
