• Discover. Ten villages on the edge of the precipice not suitable for those who have vertigo

  • Travelers.Lins and Nick, the naturist couple who make a living traveling the world

We can talk, although we know it doesn't matter, about size.

And the oldest or the prettiest.

Or we can speak of the most loved ones, of those trees with which we establish

an affective relationship

.

Of that, among other things, is the national contest of the National Tree of the Year organized by Bosques sin Fronteras to publicize the forest heritage of our country.

In the last edition, the winner was a holm oak

more than 1,200 years old

, "certainly one of the oldest in the entire Iberian Peninsula", which many residents of Mendaza go up to

greet

as if it were one of this town Navarrese.

It will end, of course, outliving us all, like many of the trees that are presented this year in this unique contest.

"The aim of the contest is to draw attention to these special trees because of the relationship they have with man," explains Susana Domínguez Lerena, president of Bosques Sin Fronteras, a non-profit organization whose purpose is the protection, conservation and dissemination of the trees and forests of the planet.

Historical specimens

This year it is not easy to choose.

"This year we have some very old, others less, but they are all important trees", emphasizes Domínguez Lerena.

There is, for example, a majestic

garrofera in Alaquás

(Valencia) with about four hundred years.

A

moral in Villovía

(Burgos) next to a Romanesque church from which, according to oral tradition, no child or adult who climbed it has ever fallen.

Or a beautiful

carbayón in the Asturian town of Cornellana

that offers its shade to pilgrims who have been traveling on the Camino Primitivo to Santiago for more than half a millennium.

The quejigo de Júrtiga (Granada), an 850-year-old tree.

In total, 11 candidates of the 15 who presented themselves because not all of them got the blessing of the NGO jury.

The winning tree will compete in Europe

next February

for the

Tree of The Year

(honorary) trophy

that last year went to a pine from the Czech Republic that grows in the middle of a rock on a lake.

"they are our allies"

"Trees are our allies against

climate change

and against a lot of problems", continues the expert.

"Let's think about the trees in the contest. Do you think that a 400-year-old tree has no reaction mechanisms to survive?"

The Year Tree helps us discover a heritage unknown to many people.

Spain is home to thousands of wonderful trees, some of which have even become famous, such as that juniper from El Hierro that has become an icon of the island.

The NGO is committed to making these specimens known with

foresight and care

.

"You have to be extremely careful with those trees. The older they are, the more needs they have, just like older people."

-And that fashion of hugging trees?

- "We have the Hug your trees, but we always say that we shouldn't hug the old tree. These precisely have

little energy

. If you do, make it a young one, although in reality, neither he needs your hugs nor you his."
