The 40-year-old man, suspected of having shot an Orthodox priest in Lyon, denied having intended to kill him, revealed this Sunday afternoon Nicolas Jacquet, public prosecutor of Lyon.

Even if he admits to being the author of the shots.

During his custody, the suspect told investigators that he only wanted to hurt the victim who had a romantic and adulterous relationship with his wife.

However, he was brought before the prosecution on Sunday as part of the opening of a judicial investigation into the count of attempted assassination.

The prosecution also requested that he be placed in pre-trial detention.

The suspect's wife not involved

"He also provided indications which allowed investigators to find in the Saône parts of the weapon used, a sawed-off rifle", continues the prosecutor indicating that the custody of the suspect's wife had been lifted on the evening of November 7.

"No element relating to a participation in the facts is reproached to him in the state of the investigation", he specifies.

"The terrorist trail is now completely removed," he concludes.

This attack, which occurred in front of the church in question two days after the attack in the basilica of Nice, had caused a great stir but the lack of claim and the personality of the victim had led the National Antiterrorist Prosecutor not to seize facts, the track of a common law dispute being more privileged.
