You can now travel with your certificate translated into Breton

Confined like everyone else, Breton speakers can now leave their homes with a bilingual certificate in French and Breton in their pocket.

The initiative comes from the Public Office of the Breton language, which translated the three versions of the certificate and put them online on its site.

An approach that is not a fantasy or a provocation according to Fulup Jakez, director of the office, a public establishment that works for the promotion of the Breton language.

“It is above all about showing that Breton is a very living language with more than 200,000 speakers who wish to be able to use it in their everyday life,” he explains to

During the first confinement in the spring, the public office for the Breton language had already translated the certificates into Breton.

“There was a real expectation from Breton speakers and this resulted in numerous downloads,” he underlines.

A completely legal certificate

Fulup Jakez also wishes to point out that the Breton certificate is completely legal and that the people in his possession do not risk being fined during checks.

"We are not outlawed because the French language is present in the document," he says.
