Just under half of the municipalities (47 percent) that responded to Kulturnyheterna's survey write that they have completely closed their library premises, while the others choose to remain open.

Since Thursday, ten of Sweden's regions are subject to stricter coronary restrictions.

Stockholm, Östergötland and Västra Götaland received stricter restrictions on 29 October.

The Swedish Public Health Agency recommends, among other things, that you should not visit libraries, but what this means in practice differs between the municipalities.

Can lead to inequality

Kulturnyheterna has sent out a survey to all 86 in municipalities in Stockholm County, Västra Götaland and Östergötland.

Of the 72 who responded, almost half, 34 of the municipalities report that they have closed their library premises, while 38 answer that they are open.

Of those who have chosen to close the premises, many have options such as home delivery and "take away" - that you can book a book that is placed outside the door.

According to a Danish study conducted by the University of Copenhagen, the low-skilled were hit hard when the Danish libraries closed for a period this spring.

Serious for society

Johanna Hansson is chairman of the Swedish Library Association and says that she understands that the municipalities have different conditions to stay open and that you do what you can, but believes that there is a symbolic value in closing the libraries.

- When libraries close, it is an obstacle to keeping society going.

It is serious for the individual and in the long run it is serious for society.

It's a big deal, it's not something to be taken lightly.

In March, the municipality of Sölvesborg chose to close the libraries due to the pandemic.

The question of whether the library had the right to close during times of crisis will be examined by the administrative court.
