  In order to understand the characteristics of short video use by minors and discover the risks of online use by minors, the China Youth Research Center conducted a national questionnaire survey from November to December 2019.

The survey adopted a combination of multi-section stratification and simple random sampling, and a total of 96 primary and secondary schools in 16 cities (districts, leagues) from 8 provinces (autonomous regions, municipalities) were selected.

The 8 provinces (autonomous regions, municipalities directly under the Central Government) are Beijing, Liaoning, Guangdong, Jiangsu, Henan, Anhui, Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region and Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region; each province (autonomous region, municipality) selects two cities (regions), Each city selects an urban area and a suburb, and each district randomly selects one ordinary elementary school, junior high school, and high school.

The subjects of the survey are primary and middle school students from the fourth grade of elementary school to the second grade of high school.

A total of 10095 valid questionnaires were collected.

What kind of children tend to indulge in short videos?

The “Characteristics and Protection of Short Videos for Primary and Secondary School Students” released by the China Youth Research Center shows that primary and secondary school students who have a heavy burden of learning, have words in their hearts, feel lonely, are psychologically stressed, and are confused about the future, use short videos. The video frequency is higher and the duration is longer.

Whether the interpersonal relationship is harmonious, the family education situation, etc. also directly affect the use of short videos by students.

Primary and middle school students who have something to say to no one use short videos more frequently and for longer

  This study found that elementary and middle school students who have something in their hearts to say nothing to anyone and have no communication partners have a higher percentage of exposure to short videos.

This may be because they get the satisfaction of communicating through short videos.

The proportion of elementary and middle school students who have something to say in their hearts who never say anything is exposed to short videos is 70.0%, and the proportion of elementary and middle school students who have something to say to friends of the same age who are exposed to short videos is 69.8%.

And the primary and middle school students who often talk to their fathers, mothers, teachers, and grandparents have much lower exposure to short videos than the former two.

  The proportion of students who use short videos frequently is 14.0%, which is even higher.

An analysis of the duration of daily use of short video shows that the proportion of primary and middle school students who often talk to their parents with their parents has more than 80% of their daily use of short video for less than 1 hour.

The highest proportion of students who have what they say in their hearts is that they use it for more than 1 hour a day.

  The survey also found that primary and secondary school students who feel lonely, psychologically stressed, and confused about the future have a higher percentage of exposure to short videos.

  Cross-analyzing some of the psychological feelings of primary and middle school students and whether they use short videos, it is found that students who feel lonely, psychologically stressed, and confused often use short videos in a higher proportion.

This may be because they use short videos to relieve psychological pressure.

A higher proportion of students who often feel lonely, psychologically stressed, and confused about the future have used short videos.

Among them, the proportion of students who often feel lonely who have used short videos is 15.6% higher than that of students who do not feel lonely. The proportion of students who often feel psychologically stressed is also 15.6% higher than that of students who do not feel psychological pressure. .

  At the same time, students who have a strong sense of loneliness, psychological pressure, and are confused about the future use short videos for longer periods of time per day, and students who are less lonely, have less psychological pressure, and are not confused about the future use short videos for shorter periods of time each day.

  The analysis found that students with a heavy learning burden have a higher proportion of using short videos.

This may be because many students relax their mood by watching short videos to reduce their learning pressure.

The proportion of students with a heavy and heavier learning burden was 67.8% and 70.1% who used short videos respectively.

The proportion of students with very light learning burden who have used short videos is 44.6%, a difference of more than 20%.

  At the same time, students who feel that they are unpopular among their classmates, looked down upon at school, and have difficulty talking with people they meet for the first time have a higher percentage of exposure to short videos, and use short videos more frequently, and use short videos every day. It can be seen that students’ interpersonal relationship experience is closely related to the frequency and duration of using short videos. Students who feel pressure and lack of skills in interpersonal relationships tend to use short videos for more time.

  The data shows that the degree of harmony in interpersonal relationships is also closely related to how often students use short videos.

Students who have a bad relationship with their parents, teachers, and classmates use short videos more frequently and use short videos for too long a day.

The proportion of students who have a good relationship with their parents, teachers, and classmates is higher than that of students who use it for less than 1 hour a day, which is significantly higher than that of students with very poor and poor interpersonal relationships.

From this, it can be inferred that primary and secondary school students who have a more harmonious and relaxed relationship with their parents, teachers, and classmates use short videos for a moderate amount of time.

Students who often feel that adults do not respect themselves use short videos more often

  A cross-analysis of the family education of primary and middle school students and whether they have used short videos shows that 75.3% of students who often feel that adults disrespect themselves have used short videos, and 73.5 of students who often feel unfree. %.

Similarly, students who often find their parents nagging annoying and students whose families often sit together and do not communicate with each other use short videos.

  To cultivate good media use habits for minors, it is not enough to preach to minors. Adults are required to take the lead, and even to change the world of adults for minors.

Cross-analysis of some related factors found that primary and secondary school students who communicate more with their children, have better parent-child relationships, less psychological pressure, harmonious interpersonal relationships, and democratic family parenting styles use short video frequency and duration more scientifically and reasonably.

Therefore, adults should communicate more with children, strive to build equal and harmonious intergenerational relationships, respect the growth characteristics of minors, and serve the growth needs of minors.
