Set up by the government as part of the deconfinement, the bicycle boost has made it possible to repair 900,000 bicycles according to the FUB (Federation of bicycle users).

Valid until the end of this year, the device allows you to repair your bike with an aid of 50 euros.

“When the operation was launched, we were counting on one million bicycles.

At the time, the government thought we were very ambitious, but we are almost there.

Barring a disaster, the million bicycles will be reached, or even exceeded on December 31, the date of the end of the operation, ”says Olivier Schneider, president of the FUB to

BFMTV

.

Several factors made it possible to meet the objectives.

Shortage of new bikes

On the one hand, there is the desire of the French to get involved in soft mobility and the establishment of new cycle paths.

The health crisis has also been there.

Because those who want a new bike sometimes have a hard time getting one.

And it's not going to get better.

The shortage could last until 2021 according to the manufacturers, specifies BFMTV.

The bicycle boost has two components: repairing an old cycle but also a "return to the saddle", consisting of a session of 1:30 to 2 hours to better understand the circulation by bicycle.

This plan, which was initially funded to the tune of 60 million euros, received an extension of 20 million euros last September.

The FUB asks that the operation be renewed in 2021. To finance the aid, which would still be 50 euros, the State could reduce its participation and local communities would take over.

Some cities are already participating in this effort, such as Rouen or Mayenne.

For Olivier Schneider, the public authorities have everything to gain.

500 jobs have already been created and many cycle repair companies could emerge.

There are currently 5,000 in the territory.
