In a school canteen in Marseille.

  • Since Monday, a new health protocol has been in force in French school canteens, in the midst of the coronavirus health crisis.

  • In Marseille, this protocol would be difficult to apply according to the actors in the field, to the point that the town hall encourages parents who can not to put their children in the canteen.

Distance of one meter between the children, a meal eaten only with the pupils of his class ... Since the start of the Monday, the school canteen, one of the rare places now where pupils over six years old fall off the mask, is now organized according to a reinforced health protocol, in the midst of the second epidemic wave of coronavirus.

But barely put in place, in Marseille, these drastic measures seem difficult to apply in the canteens of Marseille schools whose organization, apart from the health crisis, is already problematic.

"It's going to be a mess," sighs Séverine Gil, president of the Marseille association of parents of MPE 13 students. Usually, it's already tense.

Before the start of Toussaint, they were already struggling to establish a distance between the children.

We have a big problem of infrastructure of premises that are not adapted, a real lack of space.

"

"I could not apply the protocol"

"For the start of the school year, I tell you frankly, I was not able to apply the protocol with my team, sighs Magali Pellegrino, catering manager at the Saint-Louis Lévêque school and FO trade unionist.

This protocol in the canteens is not possible.

Before the start of the school year, we did three services, three rotations of 52 small per service.

There, if we respect the protocol, we are obliged to put only 36 young.

That's five rotations!

You are given a protocol on Friday evening and it must be applied on Monday morning.

But I don't have the science, nor the staff.

Monday morning, I had eight out of eleven sick people.

They sent me people who had to be trained, but there is a shortage of personnel in Marseille.

We must hire!

"

In a letter sent this weekend to parents, the assistant in charge of education Pierre Huguet even suggested to parents who could not put their children in the canteen.

"It is a possibility that offered them, procrastinates the chosen one.

The objective is to organize the school catering time as well as possible.

It's complicated to set up since September.

The sanitary protocol forced us to reorganize.

But we have mobilized staff, increased the working time of agents and we are continuing to recruit others.

We are also working to expand the spaces and find new premises.

"

An announced strike

In the middle, the parents of Marseille students remain perplexed.

“I preferred not to put my children in the canteen anymore,” explains Amélie.

It was already to relieve our canteen.

They are five for 240 students registered in the canteen.

And also, because, in my opinion, the conditions in which our children are, it is abuse.

We cannot eat opposite each other, we cannot touch each other, we have breakfast at 7:30 am and sometimes eat at 1:30 pm… It's horrible.

"

A possibility that is not offered to everyone.

Because, as wonders Charlotte, mother of a little girl educated in the city center of Marseille, "what employer would agree to let its employees take a lunch break between 11:30 am and 2 pm, like their children?

"A strike movement of the staff of the town hall is announced this Thursday.

Health

Masks, meals, face-to-face or distance lessons… What are the new health rules for pupils and students at the start of the school year?
