Abnormal blood pressure while sleeping increases the risk of heart disease

The study provides more in-depth information about cardiovascular disease risk

People who suffer from high blood pressure during sleep are more likely to suffer from cardiovascular disease and strokes in the future, especially heart failure, even when their blood pressure during the day is at its normal levels, according to new research published the day before yesterday, on The Medical Express website, citing the American Heart Association.

According to the American Heart Association's main journal, Circulation, that health care professionals usually use blood pressure measurements in the office, and during the day, to determine the patient's needs for high blood pressure medications and their dosages.

However, many patients may suffer from undetected high blood pressure during periods of the night, or in other words, high blood pressure during sleep.

"Increasingly high blood pressure at night is being considered an indicator of cardiovascular disease risk," said Kazumi Kario, MD, PhD and lead author of the research and professor of cardiovascular medicine at Gichi Medical University in Tochigi, Japan.

"This study provides more in-depth information about cardiovascular disease risk associated with nocturnal hypertension," Carrillo said.
