The royal family announced that the 27-year-old princess had married Dasho Thinlay Norbu, who was one year older than her, in a ceremony held on Thursday at the main royal palace.

The bride is the half-sister of the current king Jigme Khesar Namgyel Wangchuck, while her husband is the younger brother of the current Queen Jetsun Pima.

Princess Yovilma Chudin Wangchuck studied sociology in the United States.

She is also the chairperson of the Bhutan Paralympic Committee.

Her husband studied in India, trained as a pilot, and worked for the Bhutanese airline, Drakair.

The Wangchuck family has ruled Bhutan for more than 100 years and is highly respected in the landlocked country between India and China.

The princess’s father abdicated the throne in 2008, paving the way for democracy.
